Amy Roark-Oblak has performed extensively as a orchestral flutist, chamber music performer, solo performer, and steel drummer in the Greater-Cincinnati area, throughout the U.S. and abroad. In the U.S., she has entertained audiences in Chicago, Seattle, New York, Nashville, Lexington, Minneapolis, Orlando, and Tulsa. Abroad, Amy has performed in Peru (1998, 1999), Trinidad (2002), and she made her European debut (2004) on the Danish island of Langeland with a solo flute recital.
Amy plays flute and piccolo with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra. She has also been associate principal and piccoloist for the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony (OH) and Middletown Symphony (OH). She has performed with Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra (OH), Frank Simon Wind Band (OH), and Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra (IN). Amy has performed on stage with Blessid Union of Souls, Cherish the Ladies, singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka, and Chris Brubeck.
As a steel pannist, Amy has performed on double second steel pans with Bacchanal Steel Drum Band (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Firelytes Steel Drum Band (Cincinnati, Ohio). In Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, she performed on lead steel pan with Starlift Steel Orchestra, under the direction of Ray Holman, in the 2002 Panorama National Steel Band Competition. Also in 2002, Amy gave a pre-concert presentation about her experience in a Panorama steel band to an audience of steel drum enthusiasts at Miami University (Oxford, Ohio).
Amy has been a mentor and teacher to flute students for 14 years. In 2006, she was the flute instructor at Stivers School for the Arts (Dayton, Ohio). In the classroom, Amy was on the staff of Clark Montessori Junior & Senior High School (Cincinnati, Ohio), where she was a band director, steel drum director and taught a wide variety of music courses. In 2001, Amy was co-director of the Over-the-Rhine Steel Drum Band at Peaslee Neighborhood Center (Cincinnati, OH), and taught inner-city youth and adults beginning steel drum technique, rhythm, and music theory.
Amy is grateful for the intricate web of people who have helped shape her musical journey. She has studied flute and piccolo under Brenda Bruck Parks, Rebecca Andres and Jack Wellbaum, and has performed in masterclasses for Samuel Baron, Michel Debost, Jeff Zook, Jill Felber, Randy Bowman and Bradley Garner. Amy received a Double Bachelor of Music in 1999, in flute performance and music education, from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She has also performed several times in concert on steel drum and on flute with steel pan artist and composer Ray Holman, and has participated and performed at steel drum workshops with Jeff Narrel, Tom Miller, and Ellie Mannette.
As a hobbyist, Amy, her husband, and friends, participate in the 48 Hour Film Project each year. She also finds joy in expressing her creativity through photography, writing, jewelry making and painting. She is an outdoor enthusiast, often spending free time hiking, camping, biking, or canoing. Amy is a certified Reiki practicioner, and is a student of other holistic modalities, including T'ai chi.
